URBANA, Ill. — Illinois softball (11-31, 2-12 Big Ten) fell to No. 8/10 UCLA in five innings, 18-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UCLA plated seven runs in the opening frame, behind a two-RBI single from Kaniya Bragg, a three-RBI home run from Aleena Garcia, and solo home runs from Sofia Mujica and Jolyna Lamar.
The Fighting Illini threatened in the second, with Ellie Haggard tallying a base hit and Keirys Click notching a double to advance her to third, but the Bruins recorded all three outs in succession to end the frame.
After starting pitcher Danika Frazier retired the side in order to start the third inning, Adisyn Caryl led off the bottom of the frame with a walk. Eileen Donahue launched a double to center field, advancing Caryl to third, and Haggard was hit by the third pitch she saw to load the bases. A ground out ended the inning before any runs could score.
The Bruins tacked on another seven runs in the fourth, propelled by a two-RBI home run from Megan Grant, three-RBI home run from Garcia, and an RBI single from Soo-Jin Berry.
The final four runs for UCLA came in the fifth inning, behind a sacrifice fly from Mia Phillips, an RBI double from Rylee Pinedo, and one final two-RBI home run from Mujica.
Pinch hitter Delaney Mosley logged a base hit in the final half inning, but could not spark a rally, and UCLA took the 18-0 win in five innings to finish the series.
