    Armory Track

Indoor home meets for the Illini are held at the Illinois Armory track. The track surface is only seven years old and provides the University of Illinois with one of the best indoor facilities in the Midwest. The Big Ten Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships were held at the Armory track in February 1995.

Workers completed the $1.5 million project in early December 1992, just in time for the Illini to prepare for the 1993 season. The 200-meter track replaced a 262-yard track with long straight-aways and tight turns. The old track was considered oversized; and thus, not eligible for official indoor records. Also, qualifying times for NCAA championships were stricter on such tracks.

The renovations included permanent seating, better security for practice and more storage for track equipment. Capacity for the permanent bleachers, located on the north side and east and west ends is 1,970. The finish line has been moved to the northwest corner. The straight-away for the 55-meter dash was moved to the north side of the track.
