Senior Courtney Yaeger led the Illini and set a personal best at the Illinois Intercollegiate, earning Big Ten Co-Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday.
Sept. 18, 2012
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois senior Courtney Yaeger has been named the Big Ten Conference Co-Athlete of the Week for her effort at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships this past Friday. In what was Yaeger's first meet of the season, she finished first among her Illini teammates and second overall. Yaeger's finishing time of 17:14 is a personal best at the 5K distance, beating her old mark by 52 seconds.
The Wheeling, W.V., native helped the Illini win the Illinois Intercollegiate title for the first time since the 2008 season. She was one of twelve Illini runners to set a personal best at Friday's meet.
The last Illini runner to win the award was Meghan Frigo in 2010, for her part in the Orange and Blue victory at the Illini Open. This is the first time Yaeger has received the award. The senior is coming off breaking the school record in the 10,000m during the outdoor track season.
Northwestern's Audrey Huth also earns conference recognition after earning a second-place finish at the Spartan Invitational last weekend.
The squad is off this weekend, but will return to action on Sept. 28 in South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Invitational.
