2014 Illini Challenge Results

URBANA, Ill. - The Illinois women's cross country team opened the 2014 season by hosting the Illini Challenge at the UI Arboretum on Friday night. The Illini finished second in the team results with 31 points. Missouri won the event with 26 points.

"I thought we treated the race in a very good way," pronounced head coach Scott Jones. "For first meet there is always a lot of anxiety because we don't know exactly where we are. We've been working hard in training so some people are a little bit sore and tired, but I don't think we let that deter us from tying to compete as well as we could."

Junior Alyssa Schneider proved to be in mid-season form, winning the individual title by over 20 seconds. Her time of 17:43 was just eight seconds off the course record.

Amanda Fox was the number two finisher for the Illini, claiming fourth with a time of 18:09. Colette Falsey (18:18) and Britten Petrey (18:38) finished sixth and eighth, respectively. Rounding out the top five for the Orange and Blue was Valerie Bobart with a 12th-place showing of 18:59.

Samantha Lapp (19:07) and Hanna Winter (19:34) were the sixth and seventh runners for Illinois. Chloe Schmidt, Lindsey Rakosnik, Megan Lemersal and Kim Seger rounded out the Illini competitors.

"We wanted to be controlled, but well positioned," said Jones. "I thought we did a good job of that and as we callous ourselves to racing we will be able to keep our group together longer. That is certainly our goal."

The Orange and Blue will have a week to prepare for the next meet on the schedule. The Illini will travel to Normal, Illinois for a meeting with Illinois State on Friday, September 12.
