Richartz to Compete at USA Olympic Trials
June 22, 2012
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Sophomore Stephanie Richartz will compete in the pole vault at the USA Olympic Trials, just hours after finding out she had made the final list of competitors. The trials will be held from today through July 1 in Eugene, Oregon at Hayward Field. The defending Big Ten champion will compete in the prelim round tonight at 7:30 p.m. CT. If Richartz qualifies for the finals, she will jump again on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. CT.
"We've been training for this situation the entire time," assistant coach Mike Erb said. "We weren't surprised that Stephanie (Richartz) made it, just shocked at how last minute this whole thing came together. She is still young in her collegiate and pole vault career, so this will be one of the greatest experiences she will be a part of. Additionally, it will definitely aid in her future success."
Richartz will represent the Orange and Blue as she is the first-ever pole vault competitor for Illinois in the Olympic Trials. She is coming off a successful season, where she was crowed Illinois' first-ever Big Ten pole vault champion at the outdoor championships, setting a school record mark of 14-2 ¾ (4.34m).
