"This will be a great experience for all of our competitors, " head coach Tonja Buford-Baileysaid. "For Ashley (Spencer), this will all be new to her as this is her longest season already. She has had some wonderful accomplishments this season and being able to run in Barcelona for the USA team would be the icing on the cake. Chloe (Schmidt), Alyssa (Schneider) and Britten (Petrey) will get the best experience by going up against America's elite juniors. Hopefully all of this will make them better in the years to come."
Chloe Schmidt will kick off action for the Illini on Friday as she competes in the 800m at 3:55 p.m. CT and then again in the 1,500m along with Alyssa Schneider at 5:20 p.m. Britten Petrey will wrap up competition for the Illini on Friday, running the 3,000m steeplechase final at 6:35 p.m. Saturday's competition for the Orange and Blue is highlighted by NCAA champion Ashley Spencerwho will look to qualify for the Junior World Championships in the 400m. "Chloe (Schmidt) progressed very well this season in the 800m so she also has a great shot at making the team," Buford-Bailey said. "Britten (Petrey) is still getting to know the steeplechase but her first time running it we could tell that she has a bright future there and Coach Jeremy Rasmussendoes a great job coaching that event in which he himself was a PAC-12 champion in. I'm really comfortable with all of their chances. I'm really proud of this young group the Illini are taking to Bloomington."
