May 17, 2012
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - University of Illinois' women's track and field athlete Ashley Spencer was added to The Bowerman watch list, an award which is given to the top collegiate track and field athlete. This is Spencer's first appearance on the watch list and the second for the Illini as Angela Bizzarri appeared on the list on Jan. 12, 2010.
"Ashley (Spencer) being named to the Bowerman Award watch list is a great honor," head coach Tonja Buford-Bailey said. "It says a lot about our program and that we have such an outstanding student-athlete like Ashley participating in it. She has been representing us well and I'm sure she will continue to in the future."
Spencer, a freshman from Indianapolis, Ind., has had a record-setting first year as an Illini. The freshman is a six-time Big Ten Champion, winning the 200m, 400m and was part of the 4x400m relay team during both indoors and outdoors. Spencer also has broken five school records and has led the nation two times this season with the fastest 200m (indoor) and 400m (outdoor) times. The freshman also earned her first All-America honor after placing sixth in the 200m at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The other nine athletes on The Bowerman watch list are Brigetta Barrett (Arizona), Tia Brooks (Oklahoma), Kimberlyn Duncan (LSU), Octavious Freeman (UCF), Whitney Gipson (TCU), Christina Manning (Ohio State), Jeneva McCall (Southern Illinois), Tina Sutej (Arkansas) and Brianne Theisen (Oregon).
Spencer and select Illini women's track and field athletes will travel to Austin, Texas for the NCAA West Preliminary Round of Championships from May 24-26 at the University of Texas.
