CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois women's track and field sophomore Ashley Spencer was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 100m and finishing runner-up in the 400m hurdles at the Texas State Elite Meet, announced the conference office today.
Spencer ran the second fastest time in the country to finish runner-up in the 400m hurdles last weekend, with a time of 57.34. The Indianapolis, Ind., native's time was only second to Arkansas' Sparkle McKnight who finished first in the same race. The hurdles time ranks sixth fastest in school history and leads the Big Ten. The nine-time Big Ten champion also won the 100m title last weekend, finishing with a personal best time of 11.46. The time ranks sixth fastest in the NCAA, first in the Big Ten and sixth best in the school record books.
This is the second time Spencer has been named Big Ten Outdoor Track Athlete of the week in her career. She also was the last Illini to garner outdoor track athlete of the week on March 21, 2012.
Spencer and the majority of the Fighting Illini will head to Austin, Texas this weekend to compete in the Texas Relays on Friday, March 29-30. A small group of distance runners will compete at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. this weekend.
