Park Ridge, Ill. - Illinois women's track and field freshman Ashley Spencer was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 200m in record time at the UCF Black and Gold Challenge, announced the conference office today.

Spencer ran the fastest time in the country to win the 200m crown last weekend, with a personal-best time of 23.08. The Big Ten indoor champion in the event now ranks first in the conference and third fastest on the school record list. The victory at the UCF Soccer and Track Complex was the first for the freshman in the outdoor season.

This is the first time Spencer has been named Big Ten Track Athlete of the week in her career. The last Illini to garner outdoor track athlete of the week was Angela Bizzarri on May 5, 2010.

Spencer and the rest of the Fighting Illini will head this weekend to the Big Ten/SEC Challenge in Starksville, Miss., on Friday, March 23.
