Bloch-Jones to Compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships
March 6, 2014
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois women's track and field high jumper Kandie Bloch-Jones has qualified to compete at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships on March 14-15 in Albuquerque, N.M. The freshman is the first Illini to qualify for nationals in the event since the 2007 season.
"Our staff is very proud of Kandie," said head coach Ron Garner. "It's a big deal for a freshman to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Especially since she is from Illinois. We hope Kandie's success will encourage other top Illinois recruits to stay at home. She has worked hard this season and has performed very well in every competition. Kandie was excited to be a Fighting Illini even before she arrived on campus this past August and that's what we see each day at practice. She has been incredibly coachable and her consistency has paid off. We look forward to watching her develop during her college career."
Less than a week ago, Bloch-Jones captured the Big Ten title in the high jump after clearing a height of 1.80m, which is just under her personal-best. The freshman has held the top mark in the conference since Feb. 14 when she jumped 1.82m at the Tyson Invitational, which is also the fourth-best mark in school history. Bloch-Jones has finished in the top-three in every meet she's competed in this season, and placed either first or second in all but one meet.
The high jump trials and finals are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT on Saturday. ESPN3 will stream the meet live on Friday, March 14 starting at 6:55 p.m. CT and on Saturday, March 15 beginning at 6:50 p.m. CT. A tape delay of the championships will air Saturday, March 22 at 5:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
