PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Illinois women's track and field sophomore Ashley Spencer was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week after earning first place finishes in the 200m and 400m at the Spire Invitational, announced the conference office earlier today.
Spencer reset the school record in the 400m and finished first in the 200m. In the 400m, the sophomore crossed the line with a time of 52.07 which not only set the Illinois record, but a new Spire Invitational meet record by almost one second. The time also is second fastest in the nation and leads the Big Ten. In the 200m, Spencer clocked a time of 23.42 which is the 10th best in the nation and is first in the conference.
This is the second time Spencer has been named Big Ten Track Athlete of the week in her career and first this season. The last Illini to garner indoor track athlete of the week honors was junior Samantha Murphy on Jan. 21.
The Orange and Blue team will have next weekend off but then travel back to Geneva, Ohio to compete in the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Friday, Feb. 22 and Saturday, Feb. 23.
