CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois women's track and field junior Samantha Murphy was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week for the second week in a row, after winning the 800m title at the Illini Classic, announced the conference office today.
"Samantha worked very hard this summer and fall after coming off a disappointing 2012 season," head coach Tonja Buford-Bailey said. "Her being named athlete of the week two weeks in a row is a great example of how you are rewarded when you stay focused and fight through adversity."
After already winning the 600m two weekends ago in her season opener at the Illini Open, the junior once again was victorious. Murphy bumped up an event and won the 800m title with a time of 2:08.12, which is seventh-best in school history. Her effort leads the Big Ten and is second in the NCAA this season. Murphy's time is first in the conference by three tenths of a second and is only one-hundredth of a second behind the top time in the country.
This is Murphy's second time being named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week in as many weeks. Michigan State's Beth Rohl took home the Big Ten field athlete of the week honors.
A select Fighting Illini crew will compete this weekend at the Indiana Relays on Friday, Jan. 25 and Saturday, Jan. 26.
