Junior Samantha Murphy earns her first Big Ten track athlete of the week honors of her career after setting the fastest 600m time in the NCAA last weekend.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois women's track and field junior Samantha Murphy was named Big Ten Track Co-Athlete of the Week after a stellar season opening performance at the Illini Open, announced the conference office today.
Murphy had one of the best marks in the entire opener, winning the 600m with a time of 1:30.59, which is the second fastest time in the Illinois history. Her mark also leads the NCAA and the Big Ten. The victory last weekend was her first first-place finish this season and third in her career. The Perth, Ontario, native., also holds the 10th fastest 800m time in school history, which was set during last outdoor season.
This is the first time Murphy has been named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week in her career. The last Illini to garner indoor track athlete of the week was Melissa Bates on Jan. 25, 2010. Murphy shares the conference honor with Indiana's Kelsey Duerksen who placed first in the 800m and the mile last weekend.
Murphy and the rest of the Fighting Illini will be back in action this weekend at the UI Armory for the Illini Classic on Jan. 18-19. Illinois will compete against runners from Bradley, Lincoln (MO), Marquette, SIU-Edwardsville, SIU-Carbondale and Western Illinois. The Classic will begin at 4 p.m. with the women's pentathlon.
