Jan. 14, 2010
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Senior distance standout Angela Bizzarri was named to the official preseason watch list for the 2010 awarding of The Bowerman, announced Thursday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The list contains 10 female collegiate track & field athletes selected by The Bowerman Women's Watch Committee along with five others who were listed as also receiving mention and will be considered for future official watch lists. The Bowerman is awarded each year to the top female collegiate athlete in NCAA track & field.
Bizzarri is coming off an outstanding cross country season, where she won the 2009 NCAA Cross Country Championship title in a school record-breaking 6K time of 19:46.8 and was named the USTFCCCA National Cross Country Athlete of the Year. The Mason, Ohio, native won the national title in the 5,000m at last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships, and followed it up with a third-place finish in the same event at the USA Outdoor Championships. She also tallied 18 team points at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships after winning the 5,000m and placing second in the 1,500m.
The eight-time All-American is the only Big Ten athlete and distance runner to make the list. The committee will release its next list, using only marks from the 2010 season, on Tuesday, February 9, with updates occurring during the first Tuesday of each month leading to the final watch list on Tuesday, June 7, the week of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Watch lists also will be released on March 16 to coincide with the conclusion of the indoor season and May 18 to mark the end of the outdoor conference season. The three men and three women finalists will be named on June 15.
