URBANA, Ill. - Junior Meagan Hynes and sophomore Meghan Murphyled Illinois at the fourth annual Illini Open on Friday afternoon. Four of the five runners placed in the top 20, with two inside the top 11. Illinois came in third place with 65 points.
"We had some people do some good things today at the race," cross country head coach Jeremy Rasmussen said. "Michelle Stratton and Meghan Murphyhad very good days. It was nice to see them improve and happy with how they both performed today. The girls showed determination and tried to get to the finish line as fast as they could."
Hynes finished just in front of Murphy to lead the Illini for the first time in her career with a 5K time of 19:15. Murphy, a native of Sugar Grove, Ill., came in second for the Illini, finishing only milliseconds behind her teammate. The Illini runners are fighting for the last spots on the Big Ten Championships roster. Murphy is looking to be on the Big Ten roster for the second time in her career.
Sophomore Stratton came in third for the Orange and Blue, crossing the finish line with a time of 19:36, only 13 seconds off her personal best 5K record while Megumi Hoshi finished fourth for the team, finishing in a time of 20:04. Freshman Chloe Schmidtcame in fifth for the Illini in a time of 20:45.
Illinois' Amber Stackwon the race, running attached with a time of 18:10, a new personal-best. Northwestern won the team competition with a score of 15 points.
The Illini will host the Big Ten Championships next Sunday, Oct. 30 at the UI Arboretum with the 6K-race beginning at 11:45 a.m. CT. For more information on the Big Ten Championships, visit HERE.
