Illini Finish Fourth at Pre-National Invitational
Oct. 19, 2013
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Illinois women's cross country team competed in the White Race of the Pre-National Invitational on Saturday, and finished in fourth place with 218 points. The 8K race was held at the site of the 2013 NCAA Championships and featured a 35-team field. Individually, Alyssa Schneider led the Illini for the fourth consecutive meet, finishing eighth with a time of 21:09.
"We really put ourselves in a good position," said head Coach Scott Jones. "We worked really hard in the middle of the the race, now we just have to complete it. We didn't finish as strongly as I would have liked, but the final push will come with time. Being on that course was really nice."
Katie Porada crossed the finish line next for the Illini with a time of 21:43 to place 20th, while Amanda Fox finished right behind (21:44) to place 21st. Hanna Winter (22:23) and Audrey Blazek (22:45) each set new personal-bests, while Stephanie Morgan (22:49) and Britten Petrey (23:41) rounded out the race for the Illini.
California took first place with 105 points, as the Golden Bears' Kelsey Sanisteban won the individual title with a time of 20:18.
"There were some really bright spots," said Coach Jones. "The takeaways are that we found some things we need to work on to run a more complete race. It's a great cross country venue, and it was very important for us to be there with the top teams in the country and see the big picture of what other people are doing and what we're capable of doing."
The Illini also had runners compete at the Bradley Classic on Friday afternoon. Rachel Irion led the squad, finishing 54th overall and setting a personal-best 6K time of 22:12. Michelle Frigo (22:42) and Megan Lemersal (22:53) finished next for the Orange and Blue and set new personal-bests, as did Valerie Bobart (23:09), Kim Seger (23:16), and Ellie Palacios (23:43). Chloe Schmidt crossed the finish line with a time of 24:29.
The Orange and Blue will close out the regular season at home next weekend when they host the Illinois Open on Friday, Oct. 25 at the UI Arboretum. They will then travel to West Lafayette, Ind. for the Big Ten Championships on Sunday, Nov. 3.
