Falsey Takes Illinois Open Title
Oct. 19, 2012
URBANA, Ill. -- Sophomore Colette Falsey took the individual title and led Illinois at the fifth annual Illinois Open on Friday afternoon. Four of the five runners placed in the top 10, with three inside the top five. The Illini finished second, totaling 36 points, just three points from first.
"Colette definitely put her name on the list to be on the Big Ten roster today," head coach Jeremy Rasmussen said. "She ran really well. She's battled through some things this year, but is now her old self and competing well. She wasn't afraid of the course and of the competition and took advantage."
Falsey led the Illini for the second time in her career with a 5K time of 18:46. Rachel Irion came in second for the Illini, finishing third overall with a time of 19:00 while teammate Lindsey Rakosnik crossed the line with a time of 19:04, in fourth place overall.
"Rachel is continuing to be a solid runner," Rasmussen said. "She is consistently fighting and improving. She did a great job of getting up front and sticking her nose in the mix. Lindsey is continuing to learn and putting herself in great position to succeed. For her to come out, move forward and run well is great to see."
Finishing fourth for the squad was senior Meagan Hynes, finishing the course in a time of 19:15, while Stephanie Brown rounded out the Illinois scoring, with a time of 20:08. Sophomore Amanda Zamora finished the 5K course with a time of 20:19, placing sixth for the Illini and 27th overall.
"We competed well as a team," Rasmussen said. "The top four ran well. Being able to see the competition and fight for their spot bodes well for next week. I think if we can go out and battle with the right girls, I think we can have success next weekend at Big Tens."
The Illini will travel to East Lansing, Mich., to compete at the Big Ten Championships next Sunday, Oct. 28. The 6K race is scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m. CT.
