URBANA, Ill. -- Illinois freshman Colette Falsey led the Orange and Blue as the team's top finisher with a 12th-place finish at the Illini Challenge on Friday at the UI Arboretum. Falsey ran a 4K time of 15:25 in her Illini debut, leading Illinois to a third-place finish in the tune-up meet.
"Overall I thought the team did a good job," Illini coach Jeremy Rasmussen said. "It was nice to see the girls running together. Now that we have a meet under our belt, we will be able to move forward and have some good success in the future."
Fellow freshmen Alyssa Schneider and Britten Petrey had solid starts to their collegiate careers as they finished second and third for the Illini and 13th and 14th overall, respectively. Schneider crossed the finish line with a time of 15:27 while Petrey finished with a time of 15:31. Other finishers for the Orange and Blue included junior Meagan Hynes (21st, 16:06), freshman Chloe Schmidt (24th, 16:10) and sophomore Megumi Hoshi (30th, 16:58).
"Falsey, Schneider and Petrey, who came across the line together have been looking good at practice," Rasmussen said. "They will continue to improve throughout the course of the year and have success."
The Illini Challenge provided Illinois with a chance for the majority of the underclassmen to compete and earn valuable race experience. Out of the Illini's seven freshmen, four ran in Friday's race and all finished in the top 25.
Mara Olson of Butler University placed first overall with a time of 14:45. Teammate Becky Howarth finished in second place to help lead the Bulldogs to a Challenge victory, earning four top-five finishes.
Next weekend, the Illini will compete at the Bradley Open in Peoria, Ill., on Friday, Sept. 9 at 5 p.m. CT.
