4x400m Relay and Coleman Compete at NCAAs
June 7, 2012
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Illini competed in two event semifinals on Thursday at Drake Stadium as the 4x400m relay and sophomore Breeana Coleman (100m hurdles) participated, however both entries wrapped up their season this evening.
"The team ran very well," head coach Tonja Buford-Bailey said. "They broke the school record for the second straight time. The disqualification is unfortunate but they are very tough women and I know they will bounce back from this. The most important thing is that everyone in the stands saw Illinois running for their lives and those girls represented the Illini very well tonight. I'm proud of all of them."
In the 4x400m relay, senior Ashley Kelly came out of the blocks in lane four before giving the baton to senior Ryisha Boyd, who maintained the pace among the leaders. After the second handoff, senior Latoya Griffith remained in second before freshman Ashley Spencer took the stick for the anchor leg and finished third in their heat with a time of 3:30.07, which would've set a school record and qualified them for the NCAA finals for the first time since 1994. However, minutes later the relay team was disqualified because of a lane violation.
Coleman ran her final race of the season on Thursday, timing 13.33 in the 100m hurdles and placing 17th overall, one spot away from earning second-team All-America honors. The sophomore's time is the third-best this season.
Illinois' other qualifier, Spencer, will be in action on Friday night, as she will look to be Illinois' first national champion in the 400m at 7:02 p.m. Full results and recap can be found on fightingillini.com, and live updates will be made at twitter.com/IlliniTrackXC.
