May 16, 2014
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Fighting Illini women's track and field team concluded the first day of competition at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Friday night. Despite steady rain and wind throughout the day, the Orange and Blue are on the scoreboard after a fifth-place finish in the 10,000m by Alyssa Schneider, while Samone Thompson sits in good position through four events of the heptathlon.
In her first-ever 10,000m race, Alyssa Schneider (34:23.64) clocked the second-fastest time in school history to place fifth. Her finish adds four points to Illinois' total team score. Amanda Fox improved upon her previous personal-best time by almost 20 seconds to clock a 36:13.50, the eighth-fastest time in school history.
"Alyssa showed she has grown into a reliable Big Ten competitor with her fifth-place finish," said assistant coach Scott Jones. "She ran a smart, confident race, despite competing at that distance for the first time."
Samone Thompson has completed four events in her second-ever heptathlon and currently sits in 10th place. The sophomore set two new personal-bests in the overall event, including a mark of 8.93m in the shot put and 1.55m in the high jump. Thompson just missed her personal-best in the 100m hurdles, clocking a 14.70 to place eighth, and finished seventh in the 200m with a time of 25.86.
"Samone managed the weather conditions and delays very well for competing in her first Big Ten meet," added Jones.
The Orange and Blue are back in action tomorrow morning with the final events of the heptathlon beginning at 11:15 a.m. CT. Running event trials begin at 3:10 p.m., while finals for the long jump, shot put, javelin and 3,000m steeplechase will take place throughout the day.
