Illini Break 4x800m School Record at Drake
April 26, 2013
DES MOINES, Iowa -- On Friday at the Drake Relays, the 4x800m relay squad broke the 20 year old school record at the Drake Relays. Also, junior Breeana Coleman ran the lead leg of the 4x100m relay to the third fastest prelim time in the morning and qualified individually for the 100m hurdles final while the 4x400m relay also advanced to tomorrow's finals.
"We had a great day today," head coach Tonja Buford-Bailey said. "Our goal at this meet was to focus on the relays. The 4x800 set the tone by breaking a 20 year old school record. The 4x100 and 4x400 advanced to the finals tomorrow so we are all pleased."
The Illini ended Friday night with a school record performance in the 4x800m. The squad of junior Amanda Duvendack, sophomore Chloe Schmidt, junior Ahlivia Spencer and junior Samantha Murphy finished second and clocked a new Illinois best in the event, finishing with a time of 8:37.02. The group beat the previous time by nearly six seconds and it's the first time in 20 years the record had been broken, dating back to 1993.
The 4x1 quartet of Coleman, sophomore Asia Thomas, freshman Morolake Akinosun and senior Lauren Hollingsworth won their heat with a time of 45.81. The time was the third fastest overall and was the quickest of all six conference teams there. In the prelims of the 4x400m relay, Hollingsworth, Thomas, Ahl. Spencer and Murphy combined for a time of 3:38.90, which was the second fastest time on the afternoon behind Notre Dame. The Illini group won their heat and automatically advanced to the final event tomorrow. The relay will be the final event of the day for the Orange and Blue, scheduled to begin at 4:42 p.m. CT.
Coleman also timed 14.24 in the 100m hurdles against strong headwinds. She will compete in the event final tomorrow afternoon around 2:38 p.m. CT.
In the field events, senior Marissa Golliday set a new lifetime best in the high jump with a mark of 5-7 3/4 (1.72m). The mark cracks the school's top-10 in the event at the No. 10.
"Marissa is consistently performing top notch," Buford-Bailey said. "She high jumped an outdoor personal best and tomorrow she will run the first leg of the 4x400."
The Illini will be back in action on Saturday morning in the sprint medley relay before competing in three event finals. The remaining schedule of Illini action at the Drake Relays can be found below. Full results and a recap following the completion of the meet can be found on fightingillini.com
