Griffith Wins 400m Hurdle Title at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Illini women were in action in two meets today as the sprinters kicked off the Penn Relays while the rest of the crew ran at the Drake Relays. Senior Latoya Griffith highlighted the Orange and Blue's performances on Thursday as she took first place in the 400m hurdles at Penn Relays while the 4x400m relay team of senior Ryisha Boyd, senior Ashley Kelly, senior Latoya Griffith and freshman Ashley Spencermade the Championship of America final. At Drake, the 4x1600m relay squad exceled, placing fifth in the event.
"Latoya (Griffith) had a great day today and won her first Penn Relays title," head coach Tonja Buford-Baileysaid. "We made the Championship of America final in the 4x400 and the quartet all ran very well today and represented Illinois well. They were all so proud of themselves and had every right to be. Hopefully they can take the title on Saturday."
Griffith won her fifth 400m hurdles title of the outdoor campaign on Friday, as she took first place in a time of 57.88, her second fastest time this season. Sophomore Jesica Ejesieme finished 11th overall in the event with a time of 1:00.91. The 4x400m relay team of Boyd, Kelly, Griffith Spencer placed second with a time of 3:34.16 and qualified for the finals of the event at 4:40 p.m. CT on Saturday. The 4x100m relay squad of Ejesieme, Kelly, junior Kayla Smithand Spencer took 10th in the event with a time of 45.37. The quartet will compete in the college final on Friday at 12:12 p.m. CT.
At Drake Relays, the Illini competed in two events during Thursday's session. The 4x1600m relay which featured sophomore Amanda Duvendack, junior Madeline Aufmann, junior Courtney Yaeger and sophomore Katie Porada finished fifth with a time of 19:46.75 while freshman Chloe Schmidttook ninth with a time of 2:11.29, her second-best time of the season.
"The 4x1600m relay team was the highlight of today's competition," distance coach Jeremy Rasmussensaid. "All four girls pushed hard and did a good job. Amanda (Duvendack) ran this race for the first time in her career and did a good job and really gave us an opportunity to be in the race. Also Katie (Porada) really came through and caught us back up as the team took fifth."
