Illini Wrap Up Day Two of Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa. -- The Illinois women's track and field finished day two of the Drake Relays with four top-10 finishes. The 4x800m relay team scored points towards the HyVee Cup title, while three individual Illini recorded top-10 performances. In addition, senior Jesica Ejesieme qualified for tomorrow's 100m hurdles finals.
The Illini competed in the 4x800m relay for the first time this season. The squad of Chloe Schmidt, Ahlivia Spencer, Lindsey Rakosnik and Stephanie Morgan placed seventh in the event with a time of 8:48.16 to score points towards the HyVee Cup title. Spencer and Schmidt also ran in the individual 800m, with Spencer clocking a season-best time of 2:07.04 to place 10th.
Jesica Ejesieme advances to tomorrow's 100m hurdles finals after winning her heat with a time of 13.54 in today's prelims. The finals are set to begin tomorrow at 2:28 p.m. and will feature three runners ranked in the top-10 nationally. Kawanna Brooks competed in the prelims and clocked a new personal-best time of 14.04. Ejesieme also ran in the 400m hurdles finals, placing fourth with a season-best time of 58.38.
Jazjuan Wallace-Sipp had a huge day in the discus, placing third with a personal-best mark of 50.77m. The mark is currently ranked first in the Big Ten, and is the third-best in school history. Samone Thompson finished her first-career heptathlon on Friday, placing 13th with 4,372 points. The sophomore notched three top-10 finishes in seven events, including a seventh-place finish in the 200m.
On Thursday, Alyssa Schneider placed third in the 5,000m with a season-best time of 16:25.24.
The Illini will be back in action tomorrow morning beginning with the shuttle hurdle relay prelims before competing in the sprint medley relay and distance medley relay finals. The remaining schedule of Illini action at the Drake Relays can be found below.
