Distance Runners Into School's Top-10
April 25, 2013
DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Illinois women's track and field team began competition tonight under the lights at the Drake Relays with two distance races. All three Illini distance runners were very successful in their respective events, each finishing with times which rank in the Illinois top-10 list.
"Meghan did a wonderful job tonight in her first 10,000m ever," assistant coach Jeremy Rasmussen said. "She stuck to the race plan and executed it very well. She has been waiting to run the 10K for some time now and to run the eighth fastest time in the event in school history was outstanding. Courtney and Alyssa ran superb tonight as well. Their training has been going well and to race the way they did says a lot about how much they want to be great distance runners. To have the fourth and fifth fastest all-time in the 5,000m in the same race was really exciting and I am excited for the rest of the season for those two. It was a great way to kick off the Drake Relays and we are excited for the team to do great the rest of the weekend."
Junior Meghan Frigo kicked things off for the Illini at the prestigious meet Thursday night in the 10,000m. In her first race at the 10K distance, Frigo finished with a time of 36:15.85 which is the eighth best time in school history. Also notching their names into the school record books were senior Courtney Yaeger and sophomore Alyssa Schneider. The two ran in the 5,000m to wrap things up for the Illini, running the fourth and fifth fastest times in Illinois history. Yaeger crossed the line fourth overall with a time of 16:26.24 while Schneider placed right behind in fifth with a time of 16:27.43.
The rest of the Illini will begin competition tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. with the 100m hurdles. Friday's events will be shown live on ESPN3 starting at 6:30 p.m. CT. and a tape delayed broadcast on Saturday evening from 7-9:30 p.m. CT.
