Brooks Highlights Tom Botts Invitational for Illini
April 14, 2012
COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Illinois women's track and field team picked up 94 points and finish fourth at the Tom Botts Invitational on Saturday. The day was highlighted by the performances of junior Kawanna Brooks as she garnered 24 points individually in the 110m hurdles, high jump and triple jump at Audrey J. Walton Stadium.
"The day was definitely highlighted by Kawanna (Brooks) as she competed well in her three events, "head coach Tonja Buford-Bailey said. "We also had personal-bests from Mariah (Smith) in the discus and a season-best by sophomore Stephanie (Richartz) in the pole vault. Junior Marissa (Golliday) had a personal-best in the 400m which shows she's really moving in the right direction in order to help her in the heptathlon."
Brooks collected three runner-up finishes on Saturday as the junior timed 14.18 in the 100m hurdles, a career-best mark of 5-04 ½ (1.64m) in the high jump and a leap of 40-00 ¾ (12.21m) in the triple jump, just off her personal-best. Also setting personal-bests were junior Marissa Golliday in the 400m as she clocked a time of 54.12 to win the event and freshman Mariah Smith in the discus with a throw of 153-11 (46.91m) to earn three points for the Illini.
Sophomore Stephanie Richartz won her third pole vault event of the outdoor campaign as the Island Lake, Ill., native vaulted a season-best mark of 13-05 ¾ (4.11m) while teammate Elizabeth Eitzen finished fourth with a vault of 12-00 (3.66m). Freshman Asia Thomas also notched 12 points for the Orange and Blue with her second place finish in the 400m (54.92) and fifth place finish in the 200m (24.69).
Next week, the Illini will split as some will compete at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., April 19-21 while others will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the John McDonnell Invitational, April 20-21.
