Ashley Spencer Wins Two Events at ASU

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Illinois women's track and field team wrapped up competition at the Sun Angel Track Classic hosted by Arizona State University. The Spencer sisters notched victories on Saturday as Ashley won the 400m hurdles and Ahlivia finished first in the 800m. Freshman Morolake Akionsun continued her success as she finished first in the 100m. A full list of Illinois results from the meet can be found below.
"It was a great day for us with really good competition," head coach Tonja Buford-Bailey said. "They girls all ran in their premiere events. We saw a lot of personal bests and some marks which cracked the school's top 10 list. Ashley Spencerwon the 200m and 400m hurdles so that was great to see. Ahlivia is back from injury and came out with a victory. Now it's time for us to rest. We've been competing three weekends in a row so now we need to just practice outdoors and rest. Overall it was great to see where everyone stood in their individual events."
Ashley Spencer continued her success in the 400m hurdles as she won her first event in a time of 56.32. The time ranks fifth fastest in the Illinois record books and is the first time an Illini hurdler has cracked the top-five in the event since the 2006 season. The sophomore followed up with another victory in the 200m, crossing the line with a time of 23.05, a season best for the Illini. The Orange and Blue were also successful in the 800m as junior Ahlivia Spencer took home her first event crown on the outdoor season. Spencer crossed the finish line with a winning time of 2:07.32 which ranks as fifth fastest in school history. Finishing closely behind Spencer was sophomore Chloe Schmidtwho finished fourth with a career best time of 2:08.64 which ranks ninth best in the school record books.
Akinosun performed well in the 100m premiere heat, as she won the event with a time of 11.51. Junior Breeana Coleman finished ninth in the 100m with a season best time of 11.94 while she also placed third in the 100m hurdles with another season best time of 13.42 in the event. Junior Jesica Ejesiemefinished in the top-10 in the hurdles, crossing the finish line with a time of 13.69.
Junior Samantha Murphy ran in the 800m premiere heat and finished third with a time of 2:05.94. The time ranks fourth fastest in school history. Sophomore Asia Thomasran well for the Orange and Blue as she finished with a lifetime best 200m and 400m time on Saturday. Thomas finished the 200m with a big personal best of 24.01 while placed fifth overall in the 400m with a time of 54.01 which ranks just outside the school's top-10 list.
In the field events, senior Kristin Morrison placed third in the javelin and set a big lifetime best, with a mark of 135-11 (41.44m) to notch the third best throw in school history. Also, junior Stephanie Richartz placed fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 13-5 3/4 (4.11m) while freshman Jennifer DeBellis also competed in the event, finishing 13th with a mark of 11-2 1/4 (3.41m). Senior Marissa Gollidayfinished second in the long jump with a mark of 17-7 1/2 (5.37m) while teammate Morrison set a season best in the event with a mark of 17-1 1/4 (5.21m).
Next weekend, the Illini will be off before traveling the next week with some athletes heading to the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., others competing at the Jesse Owens Track Classic and more to the LSU Alumni Gold Meet.
