Illini Wrap Up Competition at EIU Big Blue Classic

CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Illini wrapped up competition at the Eastern Illinois University Big Blue Classic with four Orange and Blue athletes winning titles on the final day of competition. Three Illini set meet records today, including freshman Asia Thomas in the 400m, sophomore Jesica Ejesieme in the 100m H, and sophomore Stephanie Richartz in the pole vault. "Katie Porada looked fantastic today in the 1,500m, "head coach Tonja Buford-Bailey said. "She ran an eight second personal best and is way ahead of where she was last year. Kayla Smith ran a personal best in the 100m and is getting more confident each time she runs the event. We are really looking forward to next week at LSU to get some tough competition and run fast."
Junior Kayla Smith won the 100m with a personal-best time of 11.88. Smith also was the first Illini to finish in the 200m with a time of 24.14, taking second in the event. Two other Illini finished in the top-10 as Ejesieme placed fifth (24.53) and Thomas took ninth (24.85).
Thomas was the lone Illini competing in the event and took home the title with a new meet record time of 54.51. In the 1,500m, sophomore Katie Porada led the way for the Illini, finishing second with a time of 4:28.27, a personal-best and another meet record for the Orange and Blue.
Ejesieme set a meet record in the 100m hurdles as the sophomore placed second with a time of 13.74. The 4x100m relay squad of sophomore Breeana Coleman, senior Ashley Kelly, Smith and freshman Ashley Spencer set a stadium record time of 44.55, winning the event.
In the field events, school record holder Richartz set a meet record in the pole vault as she finished first with a mark of 13-1 ¾ (4.01m). Teammates Elizabeth Eitzen and Nicole Demarais finished sixth and 12th in the event, respectively. Freshman Kristen Wilson finished sixth in the shot put and freshman Mariah Smith took seventh in the discus.
Next week, Illinois will travel south to Baton Rouge, La., to compete at the Battle on the Bayou hosted by LSU.
