AUSTIN, Texas -- The Illinois women's track and field team wrapped up competition at the Texas Relays today. Freshman Morolake Akinosun set the second fastest 100m time in school history while both relays succeeded in their performances as well. Also, select Illini also competed at the Stanford Invitational and the Bill Cornell Spring Classic today.
"Today was a good day," head coach Tonja Buford-Bailey said. "The 4x100m ran well, considering we're still trying to piece the team together and get more opportunities to practice overall, especially exchanges. Morolake ran extremely well, almost setting the school record in the 100m. The 4x400m relay ran a half second off the school record as well. Also running a great race was Samantha in the 1,500m. It was her first time running the event and she ran a time in the school's top-10. Overall it was a really awesome effort by everyone. It was good to finally get good weather. The girls really did well."
Akinosun continued her success as a freshman at Illinois, placing sixth in the 100m with a personal best time of 11.29. The time is the second fastest in school history and is the first time an Illini sprinter has been in the top two in the event since 1998. Akinosun's mark also ranks in the top-five in the nation and leads the conference. Junior Samantha Murphy ran in her first 1,500m of her career at the Texas Relays. Murphy finished seventh overall in the event with a time of 4:23.12 which ranks eighth in school history.
The 4x100m quartet of senior Lauren Hollingsworth, sophomore Asia Thomas, Akionsun and sophomore Ashley Spencer finished fifth overall in the event with a time of 44.58. The Illini continued their success in the relays as the 4x400 squad of senior Marissa Golliday, Akinosun, Spencer and Thomas clocked a time of 3:31.63 which is a season best and ranks third fastest in the school record books.
At the Stanford Invitational, senior Courtney Yaeger finished third in the 10,000m last night with a time of 34:25.01 which almost resets the school record she set last season (34:23.60). Two Illini also ran in the 800m as redshirt junior Stephanie Morgan finished fourth overall with a time of 2:10.49 and junior Katie Porada placed seventh with a time of 2:11.27.
The Illini will travel to Tempe, Ariz., next weekend for Arizona State's Sun Angel Track Classic on April 5-6.
