Cassie Hunt Named Big Ten Runner Of The Week

Oct. 5, 2004

Illinois sophomore Cassie Hunt earned Big Ten Runner of the Week honors, the conference announced today. The UI sophomore, a first time winner of the award, had a career day last Friday in her first race of the season at the Pre-Regional meet in Peoria, Ill., setting an Illinois record for the fastest 6K time at 21:01.71 while winning the race and leading the team to the meet victory.

Hunt, last season's Big Ten Freshman of the Year and the first-ever Illini freshman to qualify individually for the NCAA race, lowered her personal best by 28 seconds and shaved 23 seconds off the school record.

"I'm really pleased for Cassie," head coach Karen Harvey said. "She really earned this honor and the season's just beginning for her. Hopefully this is an indication of better things to come for her and the team."
