Champaign, Illinois - University of Illinois sophomore Amber Hunt (Naperville, Ill./Central HS) has been named the Big Ten Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced this afternoon. Hunt earns the award after leading the Illini to victory this past weekend at the Midwest Pre-Regional Meet at Northern Iowa.
Hunt finished first out of 50 runners in the meet to claim the first individual cross country title of her collegiate career. In her first competitive race at 6,000 meters, Hunt covered the course in a time of 21:27, which ranks as the third-fastest 6-K time in the Big Ten this season. She led the Illini charge to victory, as the Orange and Blue won the five-team meet with a score of 24 points. Following the meet, Illinois skyrocketed in the regional polls, moving from tenth to fourth in the Midwest Region.
Hunt and the Illini are off this weekend as they prepare for their next competition, the Pre-NCAA Meet (6-K) hosted by Iowa State University, on Saturday, October 14.
