Illinois set a standard of excellence today as the women took third place at its season opening meet at the Hawkeye Open in Iowa City, Iowa. The freshmen Illini showed its impacting potential on the season with their standout performance.

Freshman Jamie Kuhl made an impressive debut as an Illini by finishing as the first true freshman of the race and fourth overall with a time of 10:49. Kuhl's performance proves she is capable of finishing races strongly, which positions her as an additional threat to the Illini's force of speedsters.

"Jamie went out hard, leading the race and showing great courage," head coach Karen Harvey said. "All of our racers had a very hard week of training and I was pleased with everyone's performance."

The Fighting Illini will be in action again on September 17, 2005 at the Illini "Pack It Up" Challenge, their lone home meet of the season, at the Illinois Arboretum in Urbana, Illinois.
