Maddie Mayers earns her second Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.
Nov. 18, 2013
Rosemont, Ill. – Illinois redshirt freshman middle blocker Maddie Mayers was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week this afternoon, after leading the Illini to a 3-0 sweep of No. 18 Purdue. It marks the second weekly conference honor for the Fort Wayne, Ind., native, after she earned first Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor of the season back on Sept. 2.
After missing her first match of the season on Friday night against Indiana, Mayers returned to the starting lineup to face No. 18 Purdue, where she proved a valuable asset to the Fighting Illini on both offense and defense. The middle hit .700 with seven kills and no errors and put up a match-high five blocks to help lead the Illini to a 3-0 victory over the talented Boilermakers.
Mayers leads the Illini with 103 blocks on the season and ranks seventh in the Big Ten with an average of 1.12 blocks per set. Her performance against the Boilermakers marked the 13th time this season that Mayers has registered at least five blocks in a match and her best hitting percentage to date, beating out the .643 (9-0-14) she posted at No. 11 Iowa State.
The Illini hit the road this upcoming weekend, taking on Ohio State and Penn State in the penultimate week of the regular season. Illinois split with the pair at home back in mid-October, downing the Buckeyes, 3-1, and but dropping a heartbreaker in five sets to then-No. 4 Penn State.
