Volleyball Adds Matti Bielfeldt to 2014 Roster
May 19, 2014
Champaign, Ill. – Fighting Illini volleyball is proud to announce the addition of Matti Bielfeldt (Peoria Heights, Ill.) to the roster for the upcoming season. Bielfeldt will be the final new member for Fall 2014, joining freshman Brandi Donnelly and sophomore transfer Allison Palmer, who both enrolled in January. Bielfeldt will find a familiar face on the sidelines this fall, as the Illini’s newest assistant coach Hillary Haen served as her club coach at both Eastside Volleyball Club and Peoria Elite.
“Matti is a really amazing kid,” said Haen. “She’s a very good volleyball player and understands her role on any team she’s a part of. She’s an excellent teammate who is constantly motivating her teammates, not only vocally but also by example. She shows up to practice to work hard every day and brings a great, positive energy to the gym. I’m excited for Matti to get here and see how she uses her talents in our gym.”
A 6-foot-1 middle blocker from Peoria, Illinois, Bielfeldt was a two-sport athlete at Peoria Notre Dame High School, playing both volleyball and basketball for the Irish. In her three seasons on the PND volleyball team, Bielfeldt took home three all-conference honors, including being named First-Team All-Mid State Six following her junior and senior seasons, as well as garnering all-area and all-state honors in 2013, along with making all-tournament at the Lincoln High School Tournament.
Outside of school, Bielfeldt played four seasons with Eastside Volleyball Club and one year each with Peoria Elite, BAVC and Metamora. Bielfeldt played for three different coaches, including Illini alum and current assistant coach Hillary Haen.
Bielfeldt is no stranger to Illinois, as her parents David and Julie and sister Elle all attended the University of Illinois, along with several aunts, uncles and grandparents. Her grandfather Gary was a member of the Illini football team in the mid-50s, his wife Carlotta was a Homecoming Queen, and the Bielfeldt name graces the athletic administration building. Additionally, her older brother Max is a fellow-Big Ten student-athlete, playing basketball at the University of Michigan.
Off the court, Bielfeldt is an Honor Roll student and a member of the National Honors Society, as well as participating in Student Government and Student Ambassadors, along with the Bradley Leadership ALUMS and Earth Club.
