Volleyball Hosts Kentucky Saturday at Kenney Gym
April 14, 2014
Urbana, Ill. - The University of Illinois volleyball team will host its annual home Spring match on Saturday, April 19, at Kenney Gym. The No. 16 Illini will host No. 20 Kentucky in a rematch of their 2013 opening weekend contest, in which the Illini took down the Wildcats, 3-2, at the Long Beach State Mizuno Invitational. Both teams will have a training session beginning at 10 a.m., and following a lunch break, will compete in a five-set exhibition match at 1 p.m. Both events are open to the public with free admission.
Due to ongoing renovations at Huff Hall, the exhibition match will take place at Kenney Gym. Located at 1402 W. Springfield Ave., in Urbana, Kenney was home to Illinois volleyball for the majority of its home matches prior to 1990. Parking around Kenney Gym is limited, but most campus pass lots are free on Saturdays, and there is plenty of street parking on the blocks surrounding Kenney.
Saturday's competition marks the third of the Illini's four interscholastic spring competitions, after participating in the Indy Collegiate Invitational on April 5 and the Kansas City Spring Tournament on April 12. The Illini will conclude Spring play with a trip to Saint Louis to take on the Billikens on April 26.
In contrast to previous Spring semesters, the Illini's full 16-player squad for 2014 is already on campus and training together. Brandi Donnelly, a defensive specialist from Riverton, Ill., elected to begin her collegiate career a semester early, and Allison Palmer (Laguna Beach, Calif.) transferred to Illinois in January after three semesters at Arizona State, which included breaking the Sun Devils' single-season assists record in 2012. The pair will make their Champaign-Urbana debut on Saturday, as Illini fans will get a first look at the Orange and Blue squad that's set to kick off the 2014 season on the brand new Huff Hall floor on Aug. 29 against Long Beach State.
