Gainesville, Fla. - The Illini opened the 2002 volleyball season this afternoon with a three-game victory over Rhode Island, at the University Centre Hotel Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. Illinois won the match in straight games by the score of 30-17, 30-28, 30-19.
The Illini controlled game one the entire way after senior Sue Webber served seven consecutive points to give the Illini a 10-2 advantage. Melissa Vandrey and Lisa Argabright had three kills each in the first game.
Rhode Island did not take its first lead in the match until 13-12 in game two. The Rams built their lead to as many as five points (18-13), but the Illini came roaring back by scoring eight of the next nine points to lead 21-19. With the game tied at 26, back-to-back kills by Argabright gave Illinois the necessary momentum to close out the game.
Game three resembled game one with the Illini dominating Rhode Island from the start. Webber had four kills and the Illini scored eight points on blocks in the final game.
Argabright led the way with a match-high 10 kills on .500 hitting. The redshirt junior also had match highs of seven blocks and three aces. Webber finished with eight kills and five blocks, while Vandrey added seven kills and a match-high 11 digs.
Illinois (1-0) will face Alabama-Birmingham today at 4:30 p.m. central time. The Illini then conclude the invitational on Saturday, facing 7th-ranked Florida at 2:30 p.m. CT.
