LIEGE, Belgium - All-American Angela Bizzarri finished fifth in the 5,000 meters at the Belgian Liege with a time of 15:57.23, falling short of the 15:25.00 `B' standard to qualify for the World Championships. After placing third with a personal-best time of 15:33.02 in the 5,000 meters at the USA Championships last month, the Mason, Ohio native needed to break the `B' standard to represent the United States at the World Championships in Berlin, Germany from August 15-23.
The Liege marks the end of a successful junior season for Bizzarri, who received the UI Dike Eddleman Award for the second consecutive year after earning three All-America accolades and winning a national title in the 5,000 meters. Her outstanding performance at the USA Championships also reset her own school record for the 5,000 meters.
Renee Baillie of the United States won the race with a time of 15:20.53, finishing in front of three fellow Americans, Julie Culley (15:21.87), Rebecca Donaghue (15:34.85) and Amy Hastings (15:43.99), respectively.
