Illini Track Summer Update
 

 
Illini signee Danelle Woods will represent Canada at the Pan American Junior Championships on July 7 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, running the 3000m steeplechase.

Champaign, Ill. - A pair of incoming freshmen recruited by Illinois head cross-country coach/assistant track coach Karen Harvey will compete in the Pan American Junior Championships, July 6-8 at Sao Paulo, Brazil. Danelle Woods of Ottawa and Chantelle Groenewoud of North Vancouver will compete for their native Canada and represent the Illini in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Jr. Pan Am Games. That race is scheduled for Saturday, July 7.

Illini recruit Chantelle Groenewoud will also run the steeple for Canada at the Pan American Junior Championships on July 7 in Sau Paulo, Brazil.


• Illini assistant coach Tonja Buford-Bailey has been named to the USA Track & Field coaching staff for the Pan American Junior Championships. Buford-Bailey will serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. women's team at the meet, July 6-8 at Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Angela Bizzarri (Mason, Ohio), who just concluded her freshman season at Illinois, competed in the 3,000m at the U.S. Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held June 20-24 at Indianapolis. Bizzarri finished second in the race with a time of 9:38.42.

• Nichole Denby, who spent her collegiate days at the University of Texas and is now a volunteer coach with the Illini women's program, competed in the 100m hurdles at the U.S. Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held June 20-24 at Indianapolis. Denby finished fourth in the final with a time of 12.82 seconds, securing a spot on Team USA for the IAAF World Championships, which will be held Aug. 25-Sept. 2 in Osaka, Japan.

• Upcoming senior Mariesa Greene (Indianapolis, Ind.), who competes in the high jump and javelin for the Illini, is making a temporary move to the hardwood this summer after joining the Athletes in Action basketball team. The AIA team began training camp in Xenia, Ohio on June 18 before departing for Brazil, where it will play a number of games against Brazilian club teams. The trip concludes July 10.
