CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Junior Aja Evans was named Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, announced by the conference office today. Evans earned the accolade after turning in two performances last Saturday at the Illinois Invitational that rank first in the Big Ten.
Evans started her day out at the UI Track Stadium with a season-best performance in the shot put. She won her signature event with a throw of 54 feet, 9 1/4 inches, solidifying her position as tops in the Big Ten and moving up to sixth in the NCAA. The reigning Big Ten outdoor champion in the event, the Chicago native has now won four shot put titles this outdoor season and has hit the NCAA regional qualifying standard in the event six times.
Evans also led off the Illini 4x100m relay that qualified for the NCAA regional championship for the first time this season, teaming up with freshman Ashley Kelly, senior Omoye Ugiagbe and sophomore Tamika Robinson. The foursome ran a season-best time of 45.68 and are ranked first in the Big Ten heading into the conference championships.
The Fighting Illini have this weekend off from competition. The Big Ten Outdoor Championships will be held Friday, May 15 through Sunday, May 17 at Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.
