CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Sophomore Angela Bizzarri was named co-Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week for her weekend performance at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, the conference office announced on Tuesday. This is the first weekly honor of Bizzarri's career. She shares the accolade with Penn State senior Shana Cox.
Bizzarri had a dominating performance in the 5,000m competing in Berkeley, Calif. on April 25, winning the event title by nearly 45 seconds. She ran an NCAA regional qualifying time of 16 minutes, 16.43 seconds that also ranks as the second-fastest time in Illinois history. Jamie Turilli still holds the school 5,000m record of 16:13.53 set in 2005.
The sophomore now posts the best time in the Big Ten in the 5,000m, also ranking second in the NCAA Mideast region and ninth overall in the country. Bizzarri has regional qualifying times in two events, standing second in the Big Ten in the 1,500m (4:19.95) to go along with her top 5,000m time. She is the second Illini to be named conference athlete of the week this season, as senior hurdler LaNeisha Waller received the honor on April 1.
Bizzarri will not compete in the Illinois Twilight meet on Wednesday, meaning her next race will be at the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Illinois from May 16-18.
