CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Illinois women's track and field junior Aja Evans was named Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week after a stellar shot put performance at Eastern Illinois, announced the conference office today.
Evans had her best shot put throw of the season on Feb. 20 at the EIU Friday Night Special, winning the event with a distance of 53-11 (16.43m). The Chicago native now ranks sixth in the country and first in the Big Ten in the event and has provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships. The throw was also the second-best performance of Evans' career, as she set the school record last season with a mark of 54-8 ¼ on her way to earning indoor All-America honors.
This is the first time Evans has been named Big Ten Field Athlete of the week during the indoor season. She also earned the honor last year during the outdoor track and field season.
Evans and the rest of the Fighting Illini will head this weekend to the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Bloomington, Ind. on Saturday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, March 1.
