    COLUMBUS, Ohio - Junior Alecia Beckford-Stewart stands in fifth place through four events of the heptathlon, getting things started for the Illinois women's track and field team at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

    Beckford-Stewart has a total of 3,137 points after Friday's competition, just behind Ohio State's Alana Gray who has 3,164 points. She fared the best in the 100m hurdles where she timed 14.29 seconds to score 938 points. Beckford-Stewart ran a strong 200 meters as well, timing 25.61 to score 832 points. She also completed the high jump and shot put competitions. Minnesota's Liz Roehrig, a two-time Big Ten heptathlon champion, is in first place at the end of day one with a point total of 3,610. The heptathlon will resume on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. CT with the long jump.

    In the 10,000 meters, the last race of day one of the championships, senior Christina Beaird ran a strong final 400m to finish 13th with a time of 37:39.81. Junior Stephanie Baliga was close behind, finishing 15th in 37:48.95. Senior Jackie Ziegler also competed on Friday for the Orange and Blue, taking 16th in the pole vault with a season-best height of 11-11 3/4.

    Following the conclusion of the multi-events on Saturday, running trials at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships begin at 1:10 p.m. CT with the 4x100m relay. Women's finals in the shot put, long jump and 3,000m steeplechase will also be contested.
