Oct. 9, 2012
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Fighting Illini women's tennis team is set to host the 2012 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional, Oct. 18-23 at Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana. The tournament will feature a singles and doubles draw. Players will vie for a spot in the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships, Nov. 8-11 at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
"The USTA/ITA Midwest Regional is one of the premier events of the fall," Illini head coach Michelle Dasso said. "We are excited to host and have such great competition at Atkins Tennis Center. This will be our first big tournament since resurfacing our courts and will be good preparation for the NCAA Championships we are hosting this May."
The tournament will begin with a 48-player qualifying singles draw on Thursday, Oct. 18, with players advancing to the 48-person main draw, which kicks off on Saturday, Oct. 20. Doubles play begins Friday, Oct. 19 and will feature 48 of the region's top tandems. Doubles action will conclude on Monday, Oct. 22, and singles play will end Tuesday, Oct. 23.
The Orange and Blue will welcome players from 24 other schools across the Midwest. The event will serve as the first of three major tournaments hosted by the squad this season. The Illini will host the four-team Midwest Blast, Nov. 2-4 to close out the fall schedule and will host the 16-team 2013 NCAA Men's and Women's Tennis Championships, May 16-27 at Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.
Sophomore Melissa Kopinski and senior Rachael White have highlighted the fall season thus far with a run to the doubles quarterfinals of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. There, the pair took down four nationally ranked opponents, including two top-10 tandems, before falling short to the No. 1 team in the country.
Juniors Allison Falkin and Misia Kedzierski, sophomore Julia Jamieson and freshman Audrey O'Connor have also seen action this fall. The Illini have played in three tournaments, including the Duke Fab Four Invitational, All-American Championships and U.S. Air Force Academy Tennis Invitational.
Admission is free for each day of the Midwest Regional and Midwest Blast.
