CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Illinois men's and women's tennis teams are set to host the 2007 Alumni Reunion Weekend this Friday, Sept. 28, at the Atkins Tennis Center. Fans are invited to come out and watch, as both squads will welcome back former Illini to Champaign for a night of tennis and laughs beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday.
"Alumni weekend is my favorite weekend of the fall," head women's tennis coach Michelle Dasso said. "It is always extremely special to welcome the Illini family back and get a chance to spend time with the many great former student-athletes. It also is beneficial for our current team to hear the alums advice, perspective and stories on their past experiences at Illinois."
An event that has been a mainstay in the Illinois men's and women's tennis fall schedules for years, the Alumni Weekend again will feature notable former Illini for both squads looking to return to their collegiate roots, including 2007 graduating seniors GD Jones and Emily Wang.
Also included on the list are confirmed attendees Stephen V. Hill (1955), Frank Noble (1964), Jerry Beger (1966), James Appleman (1975), Webb Hayne (1976), Bruce Franks (1977), Todd Black (1982), Greg Philiotis (1985), John Quarenghi (1987), Michelle Webb (2003), Evan H. Zeder (2005), Leila Cehajic (2005), Pramod Dabir (2006) and Brianna Knue (2006).
"I cant wait to see all the old friends and family of Illinois tennis that will be coming back," head men's tennis coach Brad Dancer said. "This weekend is always a lot of fun for everyone involved. On top of that, we will have the chance to go to the Illinois vs. Penn State football game on Saturday. Coach Ron Zook has done a great job of getting everyone excited about being an Illini this year, so it should be a great weekend for some good tennis and just Illinois sports overall."
The festivities kickoff at 6 p.m., as former Illini from both squads will be paired with current Illinois tennis players for singles and doubles matches. From there, alumni are invited to take part in a special event being hosted by the Alumni Association. The weekend then concludes with tailgating beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday before heading to the Illinois vs. Penn State football game, with kickoff scheduled for 11 a.m. at Memorial Stadium.
