CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Illini redshirt senior Marisa Lambropoulos and incoming freshman Melissa Kopinski put together solid performances at an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Summer Circuit tournament, July 2-4 in West Lafayette, Ind. Both the veteran and newcomer advanced to the semifinals in singles action over the holiday weekend.
Ninth-seeded Lambropoulos won four matches, including a 6-3, 0-6, 10-7 victory over top-seeded Brooke Austin before falling to eventual champion Emina Bektas of Michigan, 6-3, 6-1.
Meanwhile, seventh-seeded Kopinski won six straight sets and secured an impressive quarterfinal comeback victory (5-7, 6-0, 10-6) over Purdue's Imogen Golder before losing to fellow Boilermaker Jennifer Rabot, 6-2, 6-3.
The tournament marked Kopinski's second semifinal run in as many weeks. The soon-to-be freshman advanced to the semifinals of the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Midwest Closed Section Junior Championship, June 25-30 in Indianapolis, Ind. But Kopinski could not capitalize on a first-set victory and fell to Madeline Lipp, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 7-5. The Palos Hills, Ill., native later defaulted in the third-place playoff match.
Fellow newcomer Julia Jamieson also competed in the ITA Summer Circuit tournament, going 1-1 in singles action.
