The Illini women's tennis team will be back in action this Saturday at noon as it hosts No. 11 Harvard at the Atkins Tennis Center. This will be the first meeting between the two teams. The Illini will enter the match with a 2-1 record after dropping their match two weeks ago at No. 23 Tennessee.
Seniors Jennifer McGaffigan and Tiffany Eklov lead the Illini in singles with a combined 6-0 record over the last three matches. The Illini boast one ranked singles player as McGaffigan is currently ranked No. 22. In doubles, McGaffigan teams with junior Cynthya Goulet to form the nation's 10th-ranked team and anchor Illinois' doubles attack. They will enter the match this weekend undefeated, having won all three of their doubles matches this season.
"These past two weeks," said head coach Sujay Lama, "we've put a lot of emphasis on executing in pressure situations and being explosive with our movement. We are anxious to see how much progress we have made since our last match. Harvard will be a very good test for us."
Harvard comes into the match with a 2-2 record, having picked up victories against Alabama and then-No. 13 Kentucky. They been beaten by then-No. 4 Georgia, and most recently at the ITA National Indoor Championships, they lost to No. 10 North Carolina. Harvard boasts the 49th ranked doubles team in Courtney Bergman and Susanna Lingman and also the No. 25 singles player in Bergman
Saturday is daddy-daughter day at the Atkins Tennis Center. Also, after the match the Illini coaches will be available for a coaching clinic for adults.
