FLUSHING, N.Y. - Fighting Illini senior Rachael White and sophomore Melissa Kopinski dropped their round-two doubles match in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Thursday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. With the loss, the pair falls to the tournament's consolation draw.
"Unfortunately, we got down 3-0, which is a tough hole to battle your way out of, particularly in an eight-game pro-set against elite competition," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "We were in every game, and it was a matter of points. But tomorrow represents another good opportunity."
White and Kopinski received a bye to the second round, where they faced Virginia's Stephanie Nauta and Li Xi, the 41st-ranked pairing in the nation. The fourth-seeded Illini duo could not overcome an early deficit, coming up short in an 8-4 loss.
The tandem played its way to the national tournament by capturing the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional doubles title in mid-October. White and Kopinski make up the first Illinois doubles team to earn a bid since Jennifer McGaffigan and Michelle Webb won the Midwest Regional doubles crown in 2002.
White and Kopinski will be back in action tomorrow for consolation doubles play, which begins at 8 a.m. CT.
