Nov. 4, 2012
URBANA, Ill. - The Fighting Illini women's tennis team wrapped up play at the Midwest Blast on Sunday at Atkins Tennis Center. Senior Breanne Smutko captured a straight-set singles win to highlight the day for the Orange and Blue.
"Breanne was able to get in some much-needed singles and doubles matches this weekend before her fall ended," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "This team will continue to learn and grow with each day. As a whole, it will be key for us to exude self-confidence in our games, regardless of how we are feeling that given day."
The Illini went 1-3 against Purdue in singles action. Smutko picked up the lone victory, downing Gisella Pere, 6-4, 6-3. With the win, Smutko ends the fall with a 2-1 singles mark after making her season debut in this tournament.
After winning their matches on day two, junior Misia Kedzierski, sophomore Julia Jamieson and freshman Audrey O'Connor dropped their day-three matches in straight sets to each go 1-2 in singles at the Midwest Blast.
The tournament marks the final competition of the fall for junior Allison Falkin, Smutko, Kedzierski, Jamieson and O'Connor.
Midwest Regional doubles champions Rachael White and Melissa Kopinski will play for a national doubles title at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 8-11 at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
