URBANA, Ill. The Fighting Illini went 4-1 in singles and 1-1 in doubles Saturday at Atkins Tennis Center on day two of the three-day Midwest Blast. Freshman Audrey O'Connor and senior Breanne Smutko teamed up for their second win of the tournament, while O'Connor, Smutko, junior Misia Kedzierski and sophomore Julia Jamieson won in singles.

"It was a solid day overall for the Illini," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "Breanne and Audrey impressed me in doubles. Their chemistry is continuing to grow each match they play together. Julia played pretty soundly in singles. She played some good tennis and really composed herself. Any match you play that well, you're going to continue to gain confidence."

Smutko and O'Connor led off with an 8-5 win over Georgia Tech's Elizabeth Kilborn and Jasmine Minor, making the duo 2-1 in tournament play. Kedzierski and Jamieson came up short in an 8-6 battle with Yellow Jacket tandem Megan Kurey and Kendal Woodard to give the Illini a 1-1 split in doubles.

In singles against Wake Forest, Jamieson cruised to a convincing 6-0, 6-2 win over Xue Zhang, while Kedzierski picked up a quick 6-2, 6-3 victory over Karen Forman. O'Connor was almost equally efficient, downing Brigita Bercyte in a 6-3, 6-3 decision. On court one, junior Allison Falkin won her first set but could not hold on to that lead, dropping a 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 thriller to Andrea Retolaza Andrade.

Meanwhile, Smutko returned to the court after her solid doubles play to take on Purdue's Claudia Escribens. The Alpharetta, Ga., native captured a 7-5, 6-4 win, marking her first singles victory of the fall season.

"Everyone battled today," Dasso said. "Every win you get is a good match, and Allison showed a lot of heart, fighting through some injuries. I'm not concerned about her. We just have to get her healthy for the spring."

The Illini will face Purdue in singles play tomorrow at Noon CT, following a singles clash between Wake Forest and Georgia Tech at 9 a.m.
