Lambropoulos, Allin Advance to Singles Round of 16
Oct. 22, 2011
Amy Allin and Marisa Lambropoulos each advanced to the round of 16 in singles play at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional on Saturday, while junior Rachael White and freshman Melissa Kopinski played their way to the doubles quarterfinals.
"Multiple players stood out today, which is always a great thing to say," Illini head coach Michelle Dasso said. "I was again extremely impressed with (Breanne) Smutko's play. Unfortunately, she ran out of gas, but that certainly has something to do with the run she has made here through qualifying and in the main draw. Allin, Lambropoulos and Kopinski all played outstanding tennis as well."
In singles action, Allin and Lambropoulos captured straight-set victories after receiving byes to the second round, as Allin took a 7-5, 6-3 win over Michigan's Sarah Lee, and Lambropoulos downed Northwestern's Linda Abu Mushrefova, 6-2, 7-5. After a stellar run in the qualifying rounds, junior Breanne Smutko secured a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Nida Hamilton of Northwestern in her opening match in the main draw. But Smutko's success came to a close in the second round, when she fell to Mimi Nguyen of Michigan, 7-6, 6-1.
Sophomore Allison Falkin picked up a round-one win as well, completing a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Northwestern's Natalie Edell. Falkin could not continue that momentum, however, dropping a 6-3, 6-1 match to No. 53 Kate Turvy of Northwestern in the following round. Freshman Melissa Kopinski cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Akron's Prang Pantusart in the first round before falling to fourth-seeded and 49th-ranked Belinda Niu of Northwestern, 7-6, 6-4, while senior Chelcie Abajian and White each lost in the second round.
In doubles play, Illini duo White and Kopinski took down Akron tandem Angelika and Angelina Jogasuria, 8-5, while Lambropoulos and Falkin fell to Michigan's Brooke Bolender and Emina Bektas, who are seeded third in the tournament and ranked 17th nationally.
Meanwhile, fellow Illini Misia Kedzierski continued play at the Second Chance Regional, hosted by Northern Illinois. There, the Illini sophomore claimed a second-round victory over Wisconsin's Caroline Bauer, 7-5, 6-1, to advance to the championship match of her flight.
"She probably could have executed a little bit better but was battling hard," Illini volunteer assistant coach Ric Mortera said. "Her tough play has paid off for her really well so far. It's a great opportunity for her tomorrow, and hopefully she can end the weekend on a high note."
The Orange and Blue will return to action tomorrow morning at the USTA/ITA Midwest regional for the doubles quarterfinals and semifinals, followed by the round of 16 in the main singles draw, while Kedzierski will take the court tomorrow morning at the Second Chance Regional.
