White, Kopinski Reach Doubles Quarterfinals at Midwest Regional
Oct. 20, 2012
URBANA, Ill. - Fighting Illini senior Rachael White and sophomore Melissa Kopinski played their way to the doubles quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Saturday at Atkins Tennis Center. Kopinski and junior Allison Falkin advanced to the round of 16 in singles with straight-set wins in second-round action.
"I was really impressed with Melissa and Allison today in singles play," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "Melissa looked physically stronger than I've ever seen her, particularly hitting on the run. The energy, the balance in her step and her physical strength were tremendous today, and Allison really has a way of breaking down her opponents and making good players look bad."
Second-seeded duo White and Kopinski began the day on a high note, capturing a 9-7 win over Notre Dame's Quinn Gleason and JoHanna Manningham in round three of doubles play to secure a spot in the quarterfinals for the second straight season.
"Doubles was not pretty," Dasso said. "But part of being a good competitor is playing through those non-pretty days. They got the win and can put it behind them and move forward to tomorrow."
Kopinski, who is ranked 80th nationally, extended her success to singles play with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Ana Vladutu of DePaul after receiving a bye to the second round. With the win, the Palos Hills, Ill., native earned a place in the round of 16.
Fellow first-round bye recipient Falkin, who is ranked 82nd nationally and seeded sixth in the tournament, took a quick 6-0, 6-1 decision over Illinois State's Emmie Marx in round two to join her teammate in the Sweet 16. Meanwhile, White dropped her opening-round match in straight sets.
In outdoor consolation play, sophomore Julia Jamieson downed Michigan State's Julianne Gruber, 7-6(2), 6-3. Freshman Audrey O'Connor rebounded after a loss in her first contest to win a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 battle with Detroit's Ellen Strakhova. The Illini pair later teamed up for an 8-5 victory over Akron's Madison Cohen and Angelika Jogasuria.
White and Kopinski will return to the court tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT for the doubles quarterfinals, followed by Kopinski and Falkin in singles action.
